I know what you're thinking, who the hell is Sally Lunn? And why am I multiple exclamation point excited for someone that you've never heard of? Well, she happens to be the creator of the greatest loaf of bread the size of my face! Yes, the size of my face!
Check out the story of Sally Lunn!
Sally Lunn's is located in the quaint town of Bath, in the county of Somerset, England. Bath is famous for the Roman-built baths that are a must see in town. Walking the streets of Bath, you'll see Sally Lunn's right down one of the main streets in town. Sounds easy, but if you're directionally challenged like me, just ask the nice gentleman in the candy shop around the corner on the main street.
This ginormous loaf, if it actually qualifies as a loaf - which I don't think it does, because that implies that I sliced it, and slicing it implies sharing it, and I think you can guess by the below picture, there was no sharing. I don't share well in general. But, definitely not with food the size of my face. #noregrets
Therefore, let's call this ginormous bread, a bun. I only say bun because it's not sweet or dense enough to be a cake... and Sally Lunn's also deduced "bun" based on comparable evaluation. Also, cake tends to imply sharing, which, I think we know just did not happen here.
This "bun" is soft, light, and ever so slightly sweet. The combination of sweetness on your tongue with the texture are what make this bun unforgettable.
Reminiscent of a brioche bun flavor with the texture of a french bread loaf. The bread does not crumble or flake, but tears apart easily with the slightest pull. Pulled apart, the inside resembles a Hawaiian sweet roll. You can see the smallest air bubbles spread evenly throughout the bun and it squishes and retracts with the softest squeeze. Strangely, for as big as the bun, it is light as a feather.
I'm sure it's delicious with jam, butter, or whatever your topping of choice may be. However, I ate mine plain...all of it. myself... regretting only that I hadn't bought a few more for the ride home... Don't make my mistake. #youhavebeenwarned :)
Even better, if you're not in a rush to catch your bus back to town, Sally Lunn's serves full meals throughout the day where you can enjoy a nice warm bun with your meal. Rumor has it that it's served in half's... but I can safely say, the top and bottom are equally delicious! Plus, you can always get one to go - can, and definitely should.
Enjoy!
