MISSION: 7 days, 6 nights in Maui - Find the BEST poke on the island. Let's do it!!!
Day 1: Let's do a little research...yelp, google, google, and google...OMG poke is EVERYWHERE! In the wake of being overwhelmed with all the poke options, we decided to start where we were staying in Kaanapali. After all, as the saying goes - "True love will be hard to find if you're not looking right in front of you!" FALSE - it is NOT right in front of you! Poke tacos - light and fresh, but a little too much soy flavor totally overpowered the ahi poke. However, watching the sunset over the ocean was a great start to the trip and more than compensated for the less than stellar poke.
Day 2: South Maui Fish Company Poke bowl is TO DIE FOR! (As were the fish tacos!) Let's just say, I am a lover of all quality food - I do not discriminate on looks or locations. Some of the best experiences I've had have been from the unexpected. Pulling up, you can see the bright red truck with simple patio chairs set up alongside mismatched tables, a canopy pitched over the top, with a colorful chalkboard menu. South Maui Fish Company presents itself as a super simple food truck tucked in a corner of Kihei, with poke you can only dream of!

We ordered the POKE BOWL for $18 and the fish tacos with POG juice (Passion Orange Guava - I was told that's the favorite drink there, but maybe it's something the locals sell to the tourists. If it is, thank you locals! It is deliciously addicting!) The poke comes either traditional or spicy, sits along side of a hefty scoop of white rice, and is served with a side of coleslaw.

We ordered a split of traditional and spicy - there was no way I could decide! The traditional had a mix of Maui onions, topped with seaweed flakes and sesame seeds. The salt from the soy sauce balanced perfectly with the sweetness of the Maui onions (I don't know what makes them sweeter, but MAUI ONIONS are better than the ones in CA. If I could have taken a bag home, I would have!) The spicy poke had a hint of Sriracha, but not overpowering to the ahi poke. The sweet chili was subtle, yet noticeable. It all married well, to leave a lovely lingering tang on the tip of your tongue. The coleslaw on the side was filled with chunks of fresh pineapple, leaving you feeling light and refreshed!
$18 later, I could not be more satisfied. #missionacompolished
Can we PLEASE get one of this is CA?!?
Day 3: Is it possible to beat yesterday's poke?!? Honestly, price for poke, NO WAY! (TIP: Opens at 11am until sells out - and YES, it sells out. We always try to get there at 11 and there's always a line!)
I know what you're thinking, day 3, and you're giving up? How do you know it's the best, you only ate at two places? Well, don't you worry, I ate poke everyday after, and after every meal, all I wanted was some more South Maui Fish Company. Not to say any were bad, but none left me craving more...#lovefoodtrucks
